Natural Dyes in Bali: How Bulibasha Colours Its Footwear with Plants
At Bulibasha, colour begins with nature.
We use only natural dyes to bring colour to our footwear, working with the same dyeing studio in Lovina, Bali, for more than five years. Over time, this has become a relationship built on trust, experience and a shared understanding of the patience required to work with natural colour.
Every pigment we use is derived from plants. Some come from roots, while others are found within leaves themselves. Rather than relying on synthetic pigments, we use plant-based dyes and allow the natural character of each source to become part of the final colour.
The Natural Dyeing Process
Natural dyeing is a slow process, and there is no shortcut to achieving the right colour.
The plant-based pigments are carefully prepared before the material enters the colouring process. Each plant behaves differently, and the resulting natural colour depends on how the pigment is prepared and how the material responds to it.
Some of our materials are particularly challenging to colour because the pigments do not easily soak into the fibres. When the colour does not reach the desired depth the first time, the material goes through the natural dyeing process again — sometimes several times — until the desired tone is achieved.
The process is entirely without synthetic chemicals, requiring patience, experience and an understanding of how each natural material responds to plant-based pigments.
There is also an element of unpredictability. Natural dyes can create subtle variations in tone and depth, meaning that each colour carries the character of the process itself.
For us, these variations are not imperfections. They are part of what makes naturally dyed footwear feel alive and individual.
Touched by the Bali Sun
Once the colouring process is complete, the materials are laid out to dry naturally under the Bali sun.
This final stage is simple, but it is an important part of our process. After passing through the hands of the people who prepare and colour them, the materials are given time and sunlight to complete their transformation.
It is a process that reflects something fundamental about Bulibasha.
We believe footwear can be contemporary while remaining deeply connected to the natural world. We believe in materials that carry their own character, in processes that cannot be rushed, and in the knowledge of people who understand how to work with nature rather than against it.
For more than five years, our collaboration in Lovina, Bali has allowed us to continue learning, experimenting and developing our approach to natural colour.
